UK collaborative neonatal trials & other local trials

We actively support a number of collaborative trials in the UK and are consistently in the top 10% of recruiting units. We are also exploring parental views and attitudes to being involved with multiple trials and studies.

Trials & studies

MAGPIE
Mechanisms Affecting the Gut of Preterm Infants in Enteral feeding trials. This NIHR EME funded mechanistic study will be nested within the ELFIN study and recruit n=480 infants from 10 NICUs. Although it functions in close collaboration with ELFIN it is separately funded and governed. Click the logo for more information

ELFIN
Enteral Lactoferrin in Neonates is a placebo controlled RCT and completed recruitment of 2204 babies in September 2017. It examined the effects of supplemental enteral  lactoferrin on late onset sepsis and NEC and recruited premature infants from 30 large UK NICUs. You can read more about the mechanisms of actions of lactoferrin here. Click the logo for further information about the trial.

SIFT
The Speed of Increasing milk Feeds trial is an RCT comparing 18ml/kg to 30ml/kg/day increases in the rate of milk feeds. The primary outcome is neuro-developmental status at 2 years corrected age. SIFT recruited ahead of schedule and completed enrollment of 2804 babies in June 2015 making it the largest interventional feeding study in preterm infants every conducted worldwide. The paper has been submitted for publication

SHIFT
Support at Home for Infants with Feeding Tubes. Not to be confused with SIFT! This small randomised study compares short term outcomes in babies who are discharged home early with a NG tube in situ, compared to standard treatment - staying in hospital until tube feeding is no longer required.
Most of these trials are coordinated by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU). Click the logo to see their work.
